New Students

What is a class like?
A typical class is 60 minutes, 35-40 minutes of cardio/dancing, 20-25 minutes of strength training and stretching. We dance to current (not jazz) music by Prodigy, Muse, Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas, Sean Paul, The Veronicas, and more. See our Music Page for details. Each song has its own distinct choreography, so you won’t get bored doing the same “add-on” segments over and over. Most classes include all of the following: kickboxing, core work, hip-hop and latin dance, pilates and yoga poses. Check out our Moves Page to see some typical movements.

Do new sessions begin at certain times, or can I start anytime?
Start anytime! Registration is on-going. You can even drop in for one class to check it out. See our current Class Schedule for details.

Are there classes for beginners?
We offer intensity options for all fitness levels. Within each class, the instructor shows modifications for all aerobic and strength routines. Classes include a mixture of new students and people who have been working out for a long time. Don’t worry if you think you’re uncoordinated or don’t know how to dance, the goal is to get a great workout and have fun doing it. Just remember, everyone was a new student once.

How soon will I see results?
Most people see and feel results within 10 workouts. The average person can burn 600 calories in a single 60 minute workout. We have had students, in our wicker park jazzercise classes, burn more than 650 calories in a single workout (based upon the students heart rate monitor calorie counting function). See more actual success stories here .

How much does it cost?
Drop in rate is $15.00 per class, however we frequently have promotional pricing for new students. After reading the rest of the FAQ please see our Pricing Page for current rates or to buy a pass for yourself or a friend.

What to know before your first class:
(1) Arrive at class at least 10 minutes prior to the time the class starts. We have a registration form and participation authorization/waiver for you to complete.
(2) Clothing: Any loose, comfortable clothing is fine. Most people wear yoga or regular workout pants or shorts with a tank top or T-shirt.
(3) Shoes: We recommend you bring a good pair of rubber-soled aerobic shoes with you and change into them inside the facility. Changing our shoes keeps the dance floor clean and dry.
(4) Water: Bring water in a non-breakable container.
(5) Towel or Mat: Bring along a towel or exercise mat for the floor work.

Do I need weights?
Weights are optional for new students. We recommend you familiarize yourself with the basic exercises and techniques before using weights. There are a limited number of weights and tubes for you to try or you may bring your own.

May children participate in a Jazzercise class?
We prefer students be at least 16 years of age before participating in an adult class, though much depends on the child and his or her physical abilities. You must register and sign a release form for each child who participates in class. Junior classes are available for groups of 10 or more.

Is baby-sitting available?
We do not offer baby-sitting at this time.

What are the instructors’ credentials?
Jazzercise instructors participate in an intensive screening process as well as training and a certification program, and are CPR certified. Jazzercise monitors instructors annually to ensure adherence to Jazzercise program and quality guidelines. Instructors also continue their education in all aspects of dance and physiology to keep up with the latest developments in fitness.
